On January 1, recreational cannabis became  legal in California. Business owners and HR professionals alike must be prepared to respond the various legal and practical issues implicated with this new reality.  Recreation marijuana  implicates various state and federal laws related to discrimination, reasonable accommodation, hiring, workplace testing, etc.  Make sure that you understand your legal rights as an employer and how to protect your business from any potential cannabis-related claims from your employees. Now that it is legal, employers should understand how this new law affects their existing workplace policies and employment practices moving forward.

Sergio H. Parra is the lead attorney for JRG Attorneys at Law, LLP’s labor and employment practice. Sergio represents a wide array of employers in labor and employment related litigation in state, federal, and administrative venues. Sergio is also called on a daily basis to provide practical advice on employment matters, including internal complaints and investigations, employment agreements, and wage and hour matters.

Sergio’s practice is focused on employment litigation, with a particular emphasis on the defense of wage and hour claims, employee class actions, discrimination, business owner/partner disputes, and wrongful termination. As these cases often pose significant risks to clients, Sergio has been successful through various litigation strategies in defusing and reducing that exposure that such disputes may present.

Sergio is a lifelong resident of the Monterey Bay with roots in both Watsonville and Salinas. As an undergraduate at Dominican University, Sergio majored in Business Management while interning for the City of Watsonville and the San Rafael Chamber of Commerce. After college, Sergio worked for several high-tech companies in Silicon Valley, including several startups, before being hired as an Analyst with the City of Redwood.

Intrigued by the legal questions he encountered at the City of Redwood, Sergio decided to attend the University of San Francisco School of Law. After graduating law school, Sergio returned to the Central Coast to practice law. When Sergio is away from the office, he is actively involved with several youth non-profits in addition to cheering and supporting his children in their sporting and scholastic endeavors.

Topics we will discuss at this meeting:

-How to deal with cannabis use in the workplace now that it's legal

    -How do handle impairment

    -Department of Transportation issues
